1. Turn the front wheels to the straight ahead position.
2, lvleasure how fa r you can turn the steering wheel
left and right without moving the front wheels.
. lf the play is within the limit, the gearbox and
l i n k a g e a r e O K .
' lf the play exceedsthe limit, adjustthe rack guide
(see page 17-14). lfthe play is still excessive after
rack guide adjustment, inspect the steering
linkage and gearbox {see page 17-5).

Power Assist Check
Stan the engine, let it idle.
Attach a commercially available spring scale to the
steering wheel. With the engine idling and the
v e h i c l e o n a c l e a n , d r y f l o o r , p u l l t h e s c a l e a s
shown and read it as soon as the tires begin to turn.
lf the scale reads no more than 34 N (3.5 kgf, 7.7 Ibf),
the power assist is OK. lf it reads more, check the
steering linkage for damage (see page 17-5), and
c h e c k t h e r a c k g u i d e a d j u s t m e n t ( s e e p a g e 1 7 - 1 4 ) .
