An ATM adapter (for example, a ATMLink™ S-Bus 155) supports a
LAN Emulation Client for servers or end stations. To support more than
one ELAN, a client can have multiple adapters or multiple LECs.
Router with ATM downlink — the ATM connection supports multiple
LAN Emulation clients (NETBuilder II).
This section illustrates the power, modularity, and flexibility of the
CoreBuilder 9000 Enterprise Switch in a large-scale enterprise network
consisting of headquarters offices, regional offices, and branch offices.
The following features of the CoreBuilder 9000 ATM Enterprise Switch
are shown:
Upgrading the building backbone to OC-12
Building high-performance OC-12 Campus and Metropolitan Area
Networks
High-density Server Farm applications
Upgrading the Building Backbone to OC-12
Figure 9 shows a CoreBuilder 9000 ATM Enterprise Switch network that
is deployed in an enterprise headquarters building. A network core that
consists of two CoreBuilder 9000 Enterprise Switches, redundantly
connected via OC-12 connections, is located in the Data Center in the
basement of the building.
Figure 9 illustrates the use of CoreBuilder 9000 Enterprise Switches to
form a robust network core with a very high bandwidth capable of
serving the entire headquarters network. The redundant links between
members of the core prevent a single point of failure. The
CoreBuilder 9000 ATM Enterprise Switch systems handle the LANE
services based in the CoreBuilder 9000 units.
The CoreBuilder 9000 units on the upper floors serve as edge devices;
CoreBuilder 7200 and 7400 series of Ethernet interface cards provides
high-density switched Ethernet 10 Mbps connections to workgroup hubs
or direct to the desktop.
Figure 9 illustrates an OC-12 backbone (2) connecting the
CoreBuilder 9000 ATM Enterprise Switch unit in the basement data
center to the CoreBuilder 9000 unit edge devices on the upper floors.
The CoreBuilder 9000 units were installed using OC-3 backbone links.
