7 ARP Configuration

7.1 Introduction to ARP

This section describes the basic concepts and principle of ARP.
Each device in a local area network (LAN) has a 32-bit IP address for communicating with all
other hosts. IP addresses are independent of hardware addresses.
On an Ethernet, a host or a switching device transmits Ethernet frames based on 48-bit Medium
Access Control (MAC) addresses. A MAC address is also called physical address or hardware
address, which is assigned to an Ethernet interface when a device is produced. In actual network
interworking, a certain address resolution mechanism is required to provide a mapping between
MAC addresses and IP addresses.
ARP provides a mapping between IP addresses and MAC addresses.

7.2 ARP Features Supported by the S9300

This section describes the ARP features supported by the S9300.
The S9300 supports dynamic ARP, static ARP, proxy ARP, ARPing, and Layer 2 topology
detection.
ARP
ARP is classified into the following types: dynamic ARP and static ARP.
l
l
proxy ARP
The S9300 supports the following types of proxy ARP:
l
l
l
Inter-VLAN proxy ARP and Intra-VLAN proxy ARP are performed on the super VLAN.
l
l
ARPing
ARPing consists of ARP-Ping IP and ARP-Ping MAC. ARPing is used to facilitate the
maintenance of the deployed Layer 2 features. Currently, the S9300 supports only ARP-Ping
IP.
7-2
Static ARP means the mapping between manually configured IP addresses and MAC
addresses.
Dynamic ARP means that the ARP mapping table is dynamically maintained by the ARP
protocol.
Routed proxy ARP
Inter-VLAN proxy ARP
Intra-VLAN proxy ARP
Inter-VLAN proxy ARP is used to implement Layer 3 interworking of hosts in different
sub-VLANs of a super-VLAN.
Intra-VLAN proxy ARP is used to implement Layer 2 isolation and Layer 3 interworking
of hosts in a sub-VLAN of a super-VLAN. If intra-VLAN proxy ARP is disabled, hosts in
a sub-VLAN of a super VLAN are connected at Layer 2.
