(3) Replace drive shaft j o i n t straps whenever they
are removed. The straps slightly deform w h e n
torqued i n place. Reuse of the straps m a y result i n
reduced clamp load on t h e universal j o i n t cap.
VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR
The speed sensor Is located i n the t a i l housing of
the transmission.
fiMEMOVAL
(1) Disconnect speed sensor w i r i n g .
(2) Remove sensor m o u n t i n g bolt.
(3) P u l l sensor out of t a i l housing.
(4) There is a n O-ring located inside of the t a i l
housing speed sensor bore. Use a small hook tool to
remove this O-ring.
INSTALLATION
(1) I n s t a l l a new O-ring into t a i l housing speed
sensor bore.
(2) I n s t a l l new speed sensor.
(3) I n s t a l l speed sensor m o u n t i n g bolt and t i g h t e n
to 11 N - m (95 i n . lbs.).
(4) Connect speed sensor w i r i n g .
EXTENSION HOUSING YOKE SEAL
REMOVAL
(1) Raise vehicle.
(2) Remove drive shaft assembly.
(3) Remove old seal w i t h Seal Remover C-3985
(Fig.
4 ) .

(4) Clean and inspect extension housing where the
seal was located.
INSTALLATION
(1) Start the seal into housing. Then t a p seal into
place w i t h seal installer C-3995 or C-3972 (Fig. 5).
(2) Reinstall drive shaft assembly.

s c r e w s m u s t b e r e p l a c e d with n e w p i e c e s w h e n e v e r

INPUT SHAFT SEAL REPLACEMENT
The i n p u t shaft seal is installed from the fluid side
of the adapter plate. P a r t i a l transmission disassem-
bly w i l l be required to replace this seal.
REMOVAL
(1) Raise vehicle on hoist.
(2) D r a i n the transmission fluid.
(3) Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
(4) Remove clutch slave cylinder from transmission
adapter plate.
(5) Remove front adapter plate bolts (Fig. 6).

(6) Pry front cover adapter loose.
(7) Hold i n p u t shaft while sliding front adapter off
(Fig. 7).
(8) Carefully remove seal from transmission adapter.
(9) Clean and inspect a l l sealing surfaces for wear
or damage. Replace parts as required.
