Bearing caps are not interchangeable and should
be marked at removal to insure correct assembly.
(Fig. 8) Upper and lower bearing halves are N O T
interchangeable. Lower m a i n bearing halves of 1, 2,
4, 5 and 6 are interchangeable. Upper m a i n bearing
halves of 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 are interchangeable.
(1) Remove the oil pan and windage tray, identify
bearing caps before removal.
(2) Remove bearing caps one at a time. Remove
upper h a l f of bearing by inserting Special M a i n Bear-
i n g Tool C-3059 (Fig. 10) into the o i l hole of crank-
shaft.
(3) Slowly rotate crankshaft clockwise, forcing out
upper h a l f of bearing shell.

A l s o , to a v o i d d a m a g e to t h e m a t i n g s u r f a c e s , d o
not u s e a metal s c r a p e r . I n s t e a d u s e a p l a s t i c o r
w o o d e n s c r a p e r .
INSTALLATION
N O T E :
O n l y o n e m a i n b e a r i n g s h o u l d be s e l e c -
tively fitted w h i l e all other m a i n b e a r i n g c a p s a r e
properly t i g h t e n e d .
When i n s t a l l i n g a new upper bearing shell, slightly
chamfer the sharp edges from the p l a i n side.
(1) Start bearing i n place, and insert M a i n Bearing
Tool C-3059 into oil hole of crankshaft (Fig. 10).
(2) Slowly rotate crankshaft counterclockwise slid-
i n g the bearing into position. Remove Special M a i n
Bearing Tool C-3059.
(3) I n s t a l l each m a i n cap and t i g h t e n bolts finger
tight.
(4) Tighten m a i n cap bolts i n the following torque
sequence:
(5) S t e p 1 Tighten only the center m a i n caps bolts
i n the sequence order shown i n (Fig. 11) to 20 N - m
(15 ft. lbs.). This w i l l seat the bearing caps onto the
engine block.
(6) S t e p 2 To ensure correct t h r u s t bearing align-
ment the following procedure must be done:
(7) Move crankshaft a l l the way to the rear of its
travel.
(8) Then, move crankshaft all the way to the front
of its travel.
(9) Wedge an appropriate tool between the rear of
the
cylinder block and
rear
crankshaft
counter-
weight. This w i l l hold the crankshaft i n it's most for-
w a r d position.
