Chrysler recommends a fully synthetic A P I certi-
fied engine o i l . Viper factory f i l l is Mobil 1® 10W-30.
MOPAR® provides engine oil t h a t conforms to the
service grade.

VISCOSITY
A n SAE viscosity grade is used to specify the vis-
cosity of engine o i l . Use only engine oils w i t h m u l t i -
ple viscosities such as 5W-30 or 10W-30. These are
specified w i t h a dual SAE viscosity grade which i n d i -
cates the cold-to-hot temperature viscosity range.
Select an engine oil t h a t is best suited to your par-
ticular temperature range and variation (Fig. 5).

CONSERVING
OIL
A n Energy Conserving type of fully synthetic oil is
recommended for viper engine. The designation of
E N E R G Y C O N S E R V I N G is located on the label of
the engine o i l container.
CONTAINER
IDENTIFICATION
Standard engine oil identification notations have
been adopted to aid i n the proper selection of engine
oil. The identifying notations are located on the label
of engine o i l plastic bottles (Fig. 6).

ENGINE OIL CHANGE
Change engine o i l at mileage and time intervals
described i n the Maintenance Schedule.
TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL
Run
engine u n t i l achieving normal operating tem-
perature.
(1) Position the vehicle on a level surface and t u r n
engine off.
(2) Hoist and support vehicle on safety stands.
Refer to Hoisting and Jacking Recommendations.
(3) Remove oil f i l l cap.
(4) Place a suitable drain pan under
crankcase
drain.
(5) Remove d r a i n plug from crankcase and allow
oil to d r a i n into pan. Inspect drain plug threads for
stretching or other damage. Replace drain plug and
gasket i f damaged.
(6) I n s t a l l d r a i n plug i n crankcase.
(7) Lower vehicle and fill crankcase w i t h specified
type and amount of engine oil described i n this sec-
tion.
(8) I n s t a l l oil f i l l cap.
(9) Start engine and inspect for leaks.
(10)
Stop engine and inspect oil level.
ENGINE OIL FILTER
CHANGE
FILTER SPECIFICATION
A l l Dodge engines are equipped w i t h a h i g h quality
full-flow, disposable type oil filter. Chrysler Corpora-
t i o n recommends a Mopar® or equivalent oil filter be
used.
OIL FILTER REMOVAL
Refer to Removal and Installation Section i n Group
9, Engine for procedure.
USEO ENGINE OIL DISPOSAL
Care should be exercised when disposing used
engine o i l after i t has been drained from a vehicle
engine. Refer to the W A R N I N G listed above.
