To m a i n t a i n original production handling charac-
teristics of the Viper, be sure t h a t a steering gear of
the same steering ratio is used, i f the steering gear
ever requires replacement.
The steering gear on the Viper is used to adjust
the dynamic toe pattern of the front wheels. Dynamic
Toe Pattern is the i n w a r d and outward movement
(Toe I n - Toe Out) of the front wheels through the
vehicles n o r m a l front suspension jounce and rebound
travel.
Front wheel toe pattern is critical i n controlling a
vehicle's directional stability, as the vehicles suspen-
sion moves through normal jounce and
rebound
travel. Toe pattern adjustment is done by installing
(0.5 1.0, 1.5, or 3.0 m m ) shims between steering gear
and steering gear mounting brackets. A m a x i m u m of
9.5 m m (.375 in.) shimming is allowed between the
steering gear and its mounting brackets.

POWER STEERING FLOW AND PRESSURE TEST
The following procedure is to be used to test the
operation of the power steering system on this vehi-
cle. This test w i l l provide the flow rate of the power
steering pump along w i t h the m a x i m u m relief pres-
sure. This test is to be performed any time a power
steering system problem is present to determine i f
the power steering pump or power steering gear is
not functioning properly. The following pressure and
flow test is performed using Pressure/Flow Analyzer,
Special Tool 6815 (Fig. 2), along w i t h the correct
adapters (Fig. 3).

(1) Check power steering pump drive belt tension
and adjust as necessary.
(2)
Disconnect the high pressure power steering
fluid hose at the discharge f i t t i n g of the power steer-
i n g pump.
(3) Connect hoses, Special tool 6713, from the 6815
analyzer k i t , and Special Tool 6905, from the 6893
adapter k i t , to the Power Steering Flow/Pressure
Analyzer, Special Tool 6815, as shown (Fig. 2).
(4) Connect adapter, Special Tool 6865 (Fig. 3), to
hose 6713, mounted on the flow/pressure analyzer.
Then, connect adapter, Special Tool 6826 (Fig. 3), to
hose 6905, mounted on the flow/pressure analyzer.
(5) Connect the adapter, Special Tool 6865, leading
to the inlet port of the flow/pressure analyzer, to the
discharge f i t t i n g on the power steering pump. Con-
nect the vehicle's pressure hose which was removed
from the power steering pump, to the adapter, Spe-
cial Tool 6826, leading from outlet port of the flow/
pressure analyzer, Special Tool 6815. T h e F l o w /
