CHECKING FLUID LEVEL
The transmission fill plug is located on the left side
of the transmission case.
The under body splash shield must be removed to
gain access to the transmission f i l l plug.
To check the transmission fluid level, remove the
fill plug from the transmission case. W i t h the vehicle
level, the fluid level should be at the bottom of the
f i l l plug hole.
The fluid capacity of the transmission is 3.76 liters
(4 quarts).
Located on the r i g h t side of the transmission t a i l
housing is a transmission drain plug. This plug is
used to d r a i n the transmission fluid.
TRANSMISSION DRAIN AND FILL PROCEDURE
The T-56 transmission uses a special type of l u b r i -
cant called Dexron I I I . This new fluid can w i t h s t a n d
higher temperatures t h a n standard Dexron I I , Mer-
con or Mopar 7176 fluid. The use of standard Dexron
I I , Mercon or Mopar 7176 automatic transmission
fluid is not recommended.
The transmission should be at operating tempera-
ture before d r a i n i n g fluid.
DRAIN
AND
FILL
(1) Raise vehicle.
(2) Remove underbody splash shield.
(3) Remove d r a i n p l u g located on the r i g h t side of
the transmission t a i l housing.
(4) Remove transmission fill p l u g located on the
left side of the transmission case.
(5) I n s t a l l d r a i n p l u g into t a i l housing.
(6) F i l l transmission w i t h Dexron I I I fluid. The
transmission is full w h e n the fluid level is even w i t h
the bottom of the f i l l hole.
(7) I n s t a l l transmission f i l l plug.
