Operation
Before the sensor is installed, the cam gear may
have to be
rotated.
This is to
allow the
h i g h
machined area on the gear to be directly i n front of
the sensor mounting hole opening on the t i m i n g gear
cover.
Do not i n s t a l l s e n s o r w i t h g e a r positioned at
low a r e a ( F i g . 3 3 ) . W h e n the engine i s started,
the s e n s o r w i l l be b r o k e n .
(2) Using a 1/2 i n . wide metal ruler, measure the
distance from the cam gear to the face of the sensor
mounting hole opening on the t i m i n g gear cover.
(3) I f the
dimension
is approximately
1-15/32
inches, i t is O K to i n s t a l l sensor.
(4) I f the dimension is approximately 1-5/8 inches,
the cam gear w i l l have to be rotated.

SENSOR
REMOVAL—REPLACING
WITH NEW
SENSOR
I f a new replacement camshaft position sensor is to
be installed, use this procedure.
(1) Disconnect the sensor w i r i n g harness connector
from sensor.
(2) Remove the sensor mounting bolt (Fig. 29).
(3) Carefully p r y the sensor from the t i m i n g chain
case/cover i n a rocking action w i t h two small screw-
drivers.
(4) Remove the sensor from vehicle.
INSTALLATION
(1) A p p l y a small amount of engine oil to the sen-
sor o-ring (Fig. 31).
A low and h i g h area are machined into the cam-
shaft drive gear (Fig. 32). The sensor is positioned i n
the t i m i n g gear cover so t h a t a small air gap exists
between the face of sensor and the high machined
area of cam gear.
Before the sensor is installed, the cam gear may have
to be rotated. This is to allow the high machined area
on the gear to be directly i n front of the sensor mount-
ing hole opening on the timing gear cover.
