INTRODUCTION
The battery stores, stabilizes, and produces electri-
cal current t o operate various electrical systems i n
the vehicle. The determination of whether a battery
is good or bad is made by the battery's ability to
accept a charge. I t also must produce h i g h amperage
current output over an extended period to be able to
start the vehicle. The capability of the battery to
store electrical current comes from a chemical reac-
tion. This reaction takes place between t h e sulfuric
acid electrolyte solution and the lead +/- plates i n
each cell of t h e battery. As t h e battery discharges,
the plates react w i t h the acid from the electrolyte.
When the charging system charges the battery, the
water is converted to sulfuric acid i n the battery. The
amount of acid, specific gravity i n the electrolyte can
be measured w i t h a hydrometer. The factory installed
battery is equipped w i t h a b u i l t i n hydrometer as a
test indicator (Fig. 1), (Fig. 2), and (Fig. 3) to help i n
determining the battery's state of charge. The factory
installed battery also is sealed. Water cannot and
should not be added.
The battery is vented to release gases t h a t is cre-
ated when the battery is being charged a n d dis-
charged. The battery top, side terminals and battery
cables should be cleaned w h e n under hood mainte-
nance is performed (Fig. 4).
