(7) Zero the dial Indicator and t h e n push up on the
i n p u t shaft. Record the end play reading obtained. I f
there Is no end play recorded, a t h i n n e r shim must
be installed behind the bearing cone i n the front
adapter. I n s t a l l .010 i n . t h i n n e r shims u n t i l an end
play reading can be read.
(8) Once an end play reading Is obtained, add .002
In. to the reading recorded i n Step 7.
(9) A d d the number obtained i n Step 8 to the
thickness of the shim that, was i n the transmission
when the end play readings were taken. Record this
number.
(10) I n s t a l l a shim(s) behind the bearing cone i n
the front adapter equal t o the number recorded i n
Step 9.

(1) Remove inspection plug i n the front adapter
(Fig. 62).

(2) Place cluster gear Into front adapter (Fig. 63).
(3) I n s t a l l case onto front adapter and t i g h t e n a l l
adapter bolts.
(4) Place cluster extension into back of transmis-
sion.
(5) I n s t a l l special tool 6625 Into front of transmis-
sion and h a n d t i g h t e n (Fig. 64).
(6) Stand transmission on end. The adapter should
point upward.
