T O E PATTERN
ADJUSTMENT
After a toe p a t t e r n arc has been plotted, and is
outside of shaded area on the graph, the steering
gear, rear toe links or both must be adjusted.
I f the front toe pattern requires adjustment, the
steering gear can be raised using split shims. I f the
steering gear must be lowered, the gear mountings
are misaligned and would require alignment. Refer
the Frame Dimensions provided i n this group to
determine the design height of the steering gear
mounts.
I f the rear toe pattern requires adjustment, the
rear toe links can be raised or lowered using toe l i n k
shims. The rear toe links are mounted to the frame
i n vertical elongated holes t h a t allow the toe l i n k to
be moved up or down. Toe l i n k shims i n increments
of 2 m m (0.080 in.) above or below design (nominal)
are used to position the toe l i n k .
A 2 m m (0.080 in.) change i n steering gear or toe
l i n k height w i l l effect the toe p a t t e r n by about 0.15°
when measured from the design height (nominal) to
either jounce or rebound positions. I t is typical for a
shim to have about 1 m m (0.040 in.) up and down
play.
FRONT TOE PATTERN
On the front of the vehicle, the tie rods are located
i n front of the spindles. I f the steering gear is raised,
toe-in w i l l increase
on rebound and toe-out
w i l l
increase on jounce. I f the steering gear is lowered,
the opposite would occur. The front
toe pattern
should arc from (—)0.10° toe-out at, 50 m m (2 in.)
jounce to (+)0.20° toe-in at 50 m m (2 in.) rebound.
Refer to Group 19 for steering gear service proce-
dures.
REAR TOE PATTERN
On the rear of the vehicle, the tie rods are located
rearward of the spindles. I f a toe l i n k is raised, toe-
out w i l l increase on rebound and toe-in w i l l increase
on jounce. I f a toe l i n k is lowered, the opposite would
occur. The toe pattern should arc from (+)0.30° toe-in
at 50 m m (2 in.) jounce to 0.00° toe at 50 m m (2 in.)
rebound. Refer to Rear Suspension for toe l i n k ser-
vice procedures.
SUSPENSION
INSTALLATION
After toe pattern has been inspected or adjusted,
perform the following procedures.
• I n s t a l l the coil-over-shock assemblies. Refer to
Front, or Rear Suspension for proper tightening pro-
cedures.
• Connect stabilizer bar links to lower control
arms.
• Verify wheel toe setting.
• Road test vehicle to determine i f problem is cor-
rected.
