INSTALLATION
(1) I n s t a l l rocker a r m and pedestal
assemblies
w i t h
the
stamped
steel
retainers
into
position,
tighten to 4 0 N - m ( 3 0 ft. lbs.) (Fig. 38).

gasket
surface.
Inspect covers and gaskets for distortion and replace
i f necessary.
(3) Clean cylinder head r a i l . I n s t a l l a new gasket
i f required and t i g h t e n cylinder head cover fasteners
i n sequence shown i n (Fig. 43) to 11 N - m (95 i n . lbs.).
(4) I n s t a l l closed crankcase ventilation system and
attach water tube.
(5) I n s t a l l spark plug wires and w i r e separator.
VALVE STEM SEALS OR VALVE S P R I N G S -
CYLINDER HEAD NOT REMOVED
(1) Perform fuel system pressure release procedure
b e f o r e a t t e m p t i n g a n y r e p a i r s .
(2) Disconnect negative battery cable.
(3) Remove secondary i g n i t i o n wires, spark plugs
and cylinder head covers.
(4) Remove connector wire from ignition coils.
(5) Using suitable socket and handle at crankshaft
pulley r e t a i n i n g screw, t u r n engine so the No. 1 pis-
t o n is at Top Dead Center on compression stroke.
(6) Remove rocker arms w i t h pivots. The rocker
arms should not be disturbed and left on pivots.
(7) W i t h air hose attached to spark plug adapter
installed i n No. 1 spark plug hole, apply 620.5 to 689
k P a (90 to 100 psi) air pressure. This is to hold
valves into place while servicing components.
(8) Using a suitable tool compress valve spring
and remove retainer valve locks and valve spring.
(9) The intake and
exhaust
valve stem
seals
should be pushed f i r m l y and squarely over the valve
guide using the valve stem as guide. Push
seal
against top of guide. W h e n installing the valve
retainer locks, compress the spring only enough to
i n s t a l l the locks.
C A U T I O N :
Do not p i n c h s e a l b e t w e e n retainer a n d
t o p of v a l v e g u i d e .
(10) Follow the same procedure on the remaining 9
cylinders. M a k e s u r e p i s t o n i n c y l i n d e r i s at T D C
o n the v a l v e s p r i n g that i s b e i n g r e m o v e d .
(11) Remove spark plug adapter tool.
(12) I n s t a l l rocker a r m and pedestal
assemblies.
Tighten bolts to 40 N - m (30 ft. lbs.).
(13) I n s t a l l cylinder head covers and tighten bolts
i n sequence shown i n (Fig. 43) to 11 N - m (95 i n . lbs.).
(14) Install spark plugs and secondary
ignition
wires.
CYLINDER HEAD
REMOVAL
The alloy a l u m i n u m cylinder head shown i n (Fig.
39) is held i n place by 12, 1/2 inch bolts and 8, 1/4
inch bolts. The spark plugs are located i n peak of the
chamber between the valves.
