PREFERRED
METHOD
(1) S h i m m i n g the bearings adjacent to the bearing
to be checked i n order to remove the
clearance
between upper bearing shell and the crankshaft. This
can be accomplished by placing a m i n i m u m of 0.254
m m (.010 inch) shim (e. g. cardboard, matchbook
cover, etc.) between the bearing shell and the bearing
cap on the adjacent bearings and t i g h t e n bolts to
14-20 N - m (10-15 ft.lb.)

ALTERNATIVE
METHOD
(1) W i t h the weight of the crankshaft being sup-
ported by a jack under the counterweight adjacent to
the bearing being checked.
(2) Place a piece of Plastigage across the entire
w i d t h of the bearing shell i n the cap approximately
6.35 m m (1/4 inch) off center and away from the o i l
holes (Fig. 1). ( I n addition, suspect areas can be
checked by placing the Plastigage i n the suspect
area). Torque the bearing cap bolts of the bearing
being checked to the proper specifications.
(3) Remove the bearing cap and compare the w i d t h
of the flattened Plastigage (Fig. 2) w i t h the metric
scale provided on the package. Locate the band clos-
est to the same w i d t h . This band shows the amount
of clearance i n thousandths of a millimeter. Differ-
ences i n readings between the ends indicate the
amount of taper present. Record a l l readings taken.
Refer to Engine Specifications. P l a s t i g a g e

ally i s a c c o m p a n i e d b y two scales. O n e scale i s

(4) Plastigage is available i n a variety of clearance
ranges. The 0.025-0.076 m m (.001-.003 inch) is usu-
ally the most appropriate for checking engine bearing
proper specifications.
CONNECTING
ROD BEARING
CLEARANCE
Engine crankshaft bearing clearances can be deter-
mined by use of Plastigage or equivalent. The follow-
i n g is the recommended procedure for the use of
Plastigage:
(1) Rotate the crankshaft u n t i l the connecting rod
to be checked is at the bottom of its stroke.
(2) Remove oil f i l m from surface to be checked.
Plastigage is soluble i n oil.
(3) Place a piece of Plastigage across the entire
w i d t h of the bearing shell i n the bearing cap approx-
imately 6.35 m m (1/4 inch.) off center and away from
the o i l hole (Fig. 1). I n addition, suspect areas can be
checked by placing plastigage i n the suspect area.
(4) Before assembling the rod cap w i t h Plastigage
i n place, the crankshaft must be rotated u n t i l the
connecting rod being checked starts moving toward
the top of the engine. Only then should the cap be
assembled
and torqued to specifications. D o

(5) Remove the bearing cap and compare the w i d t h
of the flattened Plastigage (Fig. 2) w i t h the metric
scale provided on the package. Locate the band clos-

ranges. The 0.025-0.076 m m (.001-.003 inch) is usu-
ally the most appropriate for checking engine bearing
proper specifications.
HONING CYLINDER BORES
Before honing, stuff plenty of clean shop towels
under the bores and over the crankshaft to keep
abrasive
materials
from
entering the
crankshaft
area.
(1) Used carefully, the Cylinder Bore Sizing Hone
C-823, equipped w i t h 220 grit stones, is the best tool
for this job. I n addition to deglazing, i t w i l l reduce
taper and out-of-round, as well as removing l i g h t
scuffing, scoring and scratches. Usually, a few strokes
w i l l clean up a bore and m a i n t a i n the required l i m -
its.
