6). Check the open circuit voltage of the battery. Volt-
age should be equal to or greater t h a n 12.4 volts w i t h
the green dot visible i n test indicator.
(3) Rotate the load control knob Carbon pile rheo-
stat to apply a 300 amp load. Apply this load for 15
seconds to remove the surface charge from the bat-
tery, and r e t u r n the control knob to off (Fig. 7).

(4) Allow the battery to stabilize for 15 seconds,
and then verify open circuit voltage.
(5) Rotate the load control knob on the tester to
m a i n t a i n 50 percent of the battery cold crank r a t i n g
for a m i n i m u m 15 seconds (Fig. 8).
(6) After 15 seconds, record the loaded voltage
reading and r e t u r n the load control to the off posi-
tion.
(7) Voltage drop w i l l v a r y according to battery
temperature at the time of the load test. Battery
temperature can be estimated by the temperature of
exposure over the preceding several hours. I f the bat-
tery has been charged, boosted, or loaded a few m i n -
utes prior to the test, the battery would be slightly
warmer. Refer to Load Test Temperature table for
proper loaded voltage reading.

(8) I f battery passes load test, i t is i n good condi-
t i o n and further tests are not necessary. I f i t fails
load test, i t should be replaced.

state of charge i n a battery. Also, i f i t w i l l pass a load
test of 50 percent of the battery cold crank rating.
