Typical
R-134a refrigerant requires a special type of com-
pressor oil. When adding oil, make sure to use the oil
t h a t is specified on the under hood label.
Due to the different characteristics of R-134a i t
requires all new service procedures.
The use of R-134a w i l l have a positive environmen-
t a l impact due to it's zero ozone depletion and low
global w a r m i n g impact.
CHARGING A/C SYSTEM
PARTIAL
CHARGE
I f i t was not necessary to completely empty the
refrigerant system, a p a r t i a l refrigerant charge can
be added to the system.

(1) Attach manifold gauge set.
(2) Set the air conditioning controls to A/C
and
Low blower speed.
(3) Start the engine and allow i t to w a r m up to
normal r u n n i n g temperature.

(4) I f the
air conditioning compressor does not
engage, disconnect the D u a l Pressure Cut Off switch.
Place a j u m p e r wire across the terminals i n the con-
nector boot. I f the compressor s t i l l does not engage, a
problem exists i n the compressor clutch feed circuit.
(5) Hold the engine speed at 1400 r p m .
(6) While following the instructions provided w i t h
the charging equipment being used, charge through
the suction side of the system. A d d enough refriger-
ant to clear the sight glass i n the filter drier.
(7) A t the point when the sight glass clears, note
the weight of the refrigerant supply d r u m or
the
level i n the charging cylinder. A d d an additional 227
g (8 oz) of refrigerant to the system. Remove the
j u m p e r wire from the cut off switch connector and
connect the cut off switch.
(8) Test the overall performance of the air condi-
tioner. Close all valves on the charging equipment
and
disconnect the
hoses from the
service ports.
I n s t a l l the service port caps.
EVACUATION
Before adding refrigerant, a l l air must be evacu-
ated from the system. Refer to Evacuating Refriger-
ant system.
