VOLVO V-DRIVE STEERING SYSTEM

The steering system should be checked periodically since
a potential hazard could develop using improperly
maintained components.
The helm unit should be checked for leaks and hose
tightness. Contact your nearest Regal dealer for further
information.
Strut
Check all the rudder arm parts for tightness. This includes
all related tie bars and rudder collar connections. Inspect
all packing nuts, cotter keys, nuts and bolts for wear.
Check for fluid leaks and loose hoses periodically. Filling
Rudder
the unit improperly could cause air in the system and
possible loss of steering. Contact a Regal dealer for
maintenance or follow the steps in the following pages to
refill the system.
The system uses a special hydraulic fluid and is filled at
the factory. It should be checked at least 2 times a year.
There is a fill plug located on the top of the helm. Make
sure the flluid level is within a 1/2" of the bottom of the
helm fill hole.
The steering cylinder has bleed screws located on the
cylinder in the bilge. A special recommended hydraulic
fluid (HA 5430) is available through your Regal dealer.
It can also be found through a Teleflex/Seastar dealer. In
an emergency Dextron II can be used to top off a low
system. If the system is leaking fluid it requires immediate
attention from a marine professional.
A periodic inspection of all hoses and connections should
be made especially at the aft steering cylinder. The steering
cylinder has a zerk type fitting that is used to lubricate
the pivot of the steering cylinder. Also, inspect the tie
bar fasteners for tightness and any cotter keys.
Unlike a mechanical steering system there is no definite
end to the travel of the steering wheel. The helm has
relief valves that allow the wheel to continue turning after
the steering cylinder has reached the end of its travel.
This is a normal condition. You will feel a slight increase
in effort to turn the wheel once this has occurred.
