Volvo-Draining & Filling Sterndrive Oil
To change the stern drive oil on DP units preceed as
follows:
1. Make sure the drive unit is trimmed to the full down
position.
2. Remove the propellers. See the section on propellers
to acquaint yourself with the hardware involved.
Oil Drain
Plug
dipstick from the vertical drive housing. This will help
the drive oil drain easier and faster.
7. Allow all drive oil to drain.
8.There is a small magnet on the bottom drain plug.
Examine it for metal debris. A fine metal powder look is
acceptable. Large particles or flaking indicate possible
internal drive gear problems. If OK wipe the magnet dry
with a soft clean cloth. If not OK take the vessel to your
nearest Volvo repair center.

3. The oil drain plug
is forward of the
propellers.

illustration. 4. Place
a gallon or larger
container under the
gearcase to catch the
used oi.l.
5. Remove the oil
drain plug.
6.

hole
beside the shift
mechanism.
To access the oil
level hole remove
the five screws
holding the shift
c o v e r . N o w
remove the oil
level plug from the
hole.

the
illustration.
10. Check magnet
for metal.
11. Check o rings
on both plugs for
nicks and wear.
Replace o rings as
needed.
12. Fill drive unit
with Volvo Penta
Synethic
Gear
Lubricant
SAE
75W-90. You may
want to purchase a
pump that will fill
the unit easier than
using tubes of
drive oil.
Fill slowly to purge
any air in the drive.
When oil appears
in the oil level hole
it is full.
