Diesel Generator-Checking/Changing Seawater Pump Impeller

The water pump impeller is a rubber slinger style device
that uses vanes to draw water through the generator via
the seacock and water strainer. The impeller is fastened
to a shaft that is driven by a camshaft or crankshaft.
Normally as the water pump impeller or housing wears
the amount of water decreases over a period of time. In
more severe cases the generator will overheat due to a
lack of sufficient water.
To check/change the water pump impeller do the
following:
1. Close the seacock.
2. Remove the seawater cover plate.
3. Remove the impeller.
4. Inspect the impeller for damaged, cracked, broken,
missing or flattened vanes.
5. Lubricate the new impeller with soapy water to aid in
installing it.
6. Install the impeller. Use a rotating motion to seat the
impeller in its housing in the direction of engine rotation.
7. Inspect the cover plate for wear such as heavy grooves
or damaged surfaces from debris. Also, inspect the gasket
for any nicks or cuts.
8. Lubricate the gasket with silicon grease and attach the
gasket and cover plate to the seawater pump housing.
