Gas Generator-Checking/Changing Spark Plugs

The generator spark plugs need to be checked/changed
at regular service intervals as noted in the maintenance
schedule.

To check/change the spark plugs:

1. Remove the spark plug wires by grasping the boot and
rotating it while pulling on the boot. The boot will release
from the spark plug. Do not pull on the wire itself since
damage to the receptacle and wire will occur. Check the
boot for debris and clean as necessary.
2. Make sure you lay the spark plug boots in the order
you removed them to eliminate the boot being put on the
wrong cylinder spark plug.
3. Blow off the areas around the spark plug holes with
compressed air to eliminate debris from falling in the
spark plug hole.
4. Remove the spark plug with a 5/8" socket with a rubber
boot to protect the spark plug from being damaged.
5.Remove and examine each spark plug. A normal firing
spark plug should be tan or gray at the spark plug tip. See
the diagnostic chart for additional information.
6. Clean each spark plug with a rag. File any debris from
the spark plug electroyte area.
7. Check the spark plug gap with a feeler gauge. Correct
gap is .024- .028; the gauge should pass through with a
slight resistance indicating the correct gap.
8. As needed regap the spark plug using a gaping tool. Fit
the gapping tool into the electroyte and pull up on it
slightly to widen the gap. Push down with the tool to
narrow the gap. Recheck each gap adjustment with the
feeler gauge.
