If the oil pressure is too low stop the engine and check
the engine oil pressure.
If the temperature is too high, check the stern drives for
obstructions. Sometimes plastic bags or sand may of been
sucked up into the intakes and as a result the water sup-
ply may be restricted. Check the engine hoses for leaks
or failures.
Remember your engines may feature other control mod-
ules such as:
Knock sensor system for low octane fuel.
Ignition, fuel and idle air control.
Rev limiters to control revolutions per minute.
5. When the engine starts, immediately check the oil pres-
sure gauge for the recommended oil pressure. Advance
the throttle slightly (Around 1000-1200 rpm's) to smooth
out the engine. Let it run at this position until it is warmed
up. Then reduce the throttle to the minimum position.
6. As the engine warms up monitor the temperature gauge
for the recommended system limits.
7. Scan your other gauges. The volt meter should show
above battery voltage. Also, it is a good idea to adjust
your trim gauges to the "in" position at this time.
8. Crank over the other engine following the same proce-
dures mentioned above. After both engines have warmed
up you can secure the remote control handles in the mini-
mum throttle position for shifting.
Engine & Controls

SHIFTING STERN DRIVE ENGINES

Look around you 360 degrees to make sure the coast is
clear before shifting the remote controls. Engage both con-
trols in forward or reverse with a brisk motion until they
reach the gear position. Do not shift the controls in for-
ward or reverse slowly as drive damage could result. With
practice you will develop this shifting motion.
As you make headway push both throttles ahead until
the bow begins to rise. With additional throttle the bow
will fall and the vessel will begin to plane. As this hap-
pens use the power trim to achieve the best running posi-
tion along with the trim tabs to adjust for load, sea and
wind conditions.
Review chapter 6 for additional operating information.

STOPPING STERN DRIVE ENGINES

To stop the engines simply pull back both throttles to
the detented neutral position from forward or reverse gear.
Let both engines idle for a few minutes especially after a
long cruise. During this time period, monitor the gauges
for recommended limits.
Never turn off the ignition keys while the engines are in
gear since at that point the vessel is out of control. Never
back in reverse with maximum throttle since water could
enter the engines through the exhaust system and dam-
age the internal engine parts.
