MerCruiser V-Drive-Checking/Changing Serpentine Drive Belt

WARNING
!
AVOID SERIOUS INJURY !
MAKE SURE ENGINE IS OFF
AND KEY IS REMOVED FROM IGNITION
BEFORE INSPECTING
SERPENTINE BELT.
BELT ROUTING DIAGRAM
Check the belt for the following conditions; glazed,
cracks, excessive wear and frying material. Minor cracks
across the belt are acceptacle but lengthwise cracks that
join across the belt cracks are not acceptable.
Note: If a serpentine belt is to be reused it must be
installed in the same direction it came off.
The belt tensioner is designed with cast stops as limit
marks. If the tensioner is contacting either of the 2 limits
during operation check the mounting brackets and belt
length. If the above condition exists, contact your closest
authorized MerCruiser or Regal dealer.
CAUTION
!
AVOID SERIOUS INJURY OR PROPERTY
DAMAGE! THE BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY
CONTAINS A HIGH TENSION SPRING.
RELIEVE THE SPRING TENSION AND SNAP
THE TENSIONER BACK SLOWLY!
1. Use a breaker bar and the correct socket to hold back
the tensioner and relieve the belt tension Rotate the
tensioner away from the belt until it stops. See Illustration
A.
2. Remove the belt from the idler pulley and slowly relieve
the tension on the breaker bar.
3. Remove the belt and reconnect the new belt according
to the belt routing illustration.
4. Use a breaker bar and the correct socket to position
the tensioner back to the engine running location and
slide the belt over the tensioner pulley. Slowly relieve the
tensioner to the belt. See illlustration A.
