ELECTRONICS- AUTOPILOT

Typical Autopilot System
Overview
The Raymarine® autopilot is a Regal option available
only on V-drive or IPS vessels. It uses the standard steer-
ing system to distribute fluid through a drive unit (hy-
draulic pump) as required to the steering ram and finally
to the rudder which turns as directed through the
SmartPilot Controller and computer.
The SmartPilot is a helm mounted component. It sends
course information to the computer (as inputed by the
skipper) and to the rudder position sensor which results
in steering changes to hold a programmed course.
A fluxgate compass mounted through the computer rec-
ognizes changes in direction quickly and the information
is used by the computer to make course signal changes.
The fluxgate is the priority compass. Other compasses
data connected to the system will receive a lower status.
