Gas Generator-Checking/Changing Zinc Anode

The heat exchanger contains a zinc anode for electrolytic
corrosion protection. The anode needs to be checked or
replaced according to the maintenance schedule.

To check/replace the zinc anode:

1. With the generator set cooled, close the seacock,
remove the anti-corrosion zinc plug from the heat
exchanger, and drain all coolant into a clean container.
2. Remove any build up on the zinc anode with a wire
brush. Replace the anode as follows taking 50% as the
replacement value from the original length and width.
a. Length= 1.7 inches
b. Width= .34 inches
3. Clean the threaded hole of the heat exchanger and
coat the threads of the zinc anode with a marine style
pipe sealant. Install the zinc anode into the heat
exchanger.
4. Open the seacock. Refill the cooling system.
5. Start the generator and check for any leaks at the zinc
anode location. The pump is operating if water flows
from the generator hull exhaust outlet. If no sign of water
shut down the system and check the seawater pump for
priming.
