Volvo-Checking V-Drive Hydraulic Steering System
Check the following items at least 2 times a year:
1. All mechanical linkages and connections for tightness.
2. Check for leaks. Turn steering wheel and pressurize to
port. Apply enough pressure to exceed pressure relief
valve pressure. You will not harm the system While
pressure is applied have someone check all port fittings
and line connections.
Repeat the procedure by turning the wheel to starboard.
Watch the oil level in the trim pump while pressurizing
the steering wheel in either hard over positions. If there
is no obvious drop in oil level, air has been removed. If
there is an obvious drop in oil level, you are compressing
air and further filling and testing is required. Repeat steps
If no leaks are obvious, the system is ready for use.
3. Check all hoses for chafing/rubbing marks, and replace
as necessary.
4. Check the steering cylinder for nicks and scratches. A
damaged cylinder shaft can cause seal failure and leaks.
Replacing seals to a damaged cylinder will not stop leaks.
A damaged cylinder shaft must be replaced immediately.
WARNING
!
AVOID PERSONAL INJURY AND PROPERTY
DAMAGE!
IF LEAKS ARE FOUND, CORRECT
BEFORE USING!
FAILURE TO CORRECT A LEAK
CAN LOWER OIL LEVEL IN SYSTEM
AND RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING.
Volvo-Filling V-Drive Hydraulic Steering System
The instructions on the following page show you how to
fill and purge a single station Teleflex SeaStar hydraulic
steering system This procedure is needed only when there
is a large leak in the system and an abundance of fluid is
lost from the system The procedure requires two people
to make sure all air is purged from the system If air remains
the system will be spongy and unresponsive.
During the entire filling procedure, oil needs to be visible
in the filler tube. Do not allow the oil level to disappear
into the helm pump, as this may allow air to enter the
system and increase the filling time. 2 quarts of special
Teleflex/SeaStar
(recommended) is required to fill the entire system noting
that it is completely out of fluid..
This procedure requires a fill bottle kit which can be made
up. If you put a vent hole in the quart filler container and
insert a plastic tube along with something to initially plug
the filler bottle hole you will be ready to fill the unit.
Note: You may elect to have your authorized Regal dealer
accomplish this task.
In the instructions "bleeder" refers to cylinders fitted with
bleed tee fittings. If bleeder tee fittings exist, open bleeder
by unscrewing bleed nipple 2 turns.
Without bleeder tee fittings, disconnect hydraulic line
from the steering cylinder fitting. The oil level in the helm
unit must be set with the cylinder rod fully retracted. If
this is not done, a spill at the helm unit will result.
Filling the helm full of oil can be done faster if oil is
poured into the helm prior to connecting filler tube and
oil bottle to the helm.
