6. Remove the oil vent screw from the vertical drive
housing as shown in illustration B. Make sure the oil drains
completely.
7. Check the contents of the container for water or
discolored oil as this could be a leaky seal problem. Do
not refill the unit. Contact your closest authorized
MerCruiser dealer.
8. Again, make sure the drive unit is level. Fill the stern
drive unit from the bottom gearcase fill plug. Use only
Mercury/Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lubricant
in the stern drive. If you are using tubes it normally
requires around 100.5 ounces to fill the unit completely.
Some people prefer to use a pump system.
9. When the lubricant exits the vertical drive fill hole
wth no air bubbles install the upper fill plug and washer.
10. Continue to fill the drive unit and the monitor will
eventually reach the correct operating level. Do not
overfill. Once the monitor is filled to operating
specifications reinstall the lower fill screw and washer.
Tighten securely.
11. Recheck the gear lubricant level at the monitor when
the stern drive is cool and the engine is not running.

MerCruiser-Checking Power Trim Fluid

1. Always check the power trim fluid with the stern drive
in the full down or in position.
2. The trim pump is located in the engine compartment
usually close to the transom. Check the oil level. It must
be between the "MIN" and "MAX" levels at the reservoir.
Make sure the lubricant is amber color. A milky appearance
normally indicates a seal or O ring leak. Contact your
closest authorized MerCruiser dealer.
3. Fill the reservoir with power trim and steering fluid.
