This chapter explains the function and operation of the LCD controller/driver.

14.1 Overview of LCD Controller/Driver

The LCD controller/driver has a 16 × 8-bit display data memory and controls the LCD display using four
common outputs and 24 segment outputs. Three different duty outputs can be selected and the LCD panel
can be driven directly.
Function of LCD controller/driver
The LCD controller/driver has a function to directly drive data in the display data memory (display RAM) on
the LCD panel using segment outputs and common outputs.
• LCD driving voltage split resistors are contained. Also, external split resistors can be connected.
• Up to 4 common outputs (COM0 to COM3) and 24 segment outputs (SEG0 to SEG23) can be used.
• A 16-byte display data memory (display RAM) is contained.
• Three different duties can be selected: 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4 (limited by bias setting).
• The LCD can be driven directly.
Table 14-1 gives the combinations of bias and duty.
Caution: When a general-purpose port is specified for the LCRH setting, the SEG12 to SEG23 pins cannot
be used as segment outputs.
