8-cylinder TDI engine (4.2 ltr. 4-valve common rail), mechanics - Edition 12.2013
All vehicles (continued):
– Fit timing chain cover (right-side) and tighten bolts as follows:
1. Pre-tighten bolts -2 ... 4- in diagonal sequence to 5 Nm us‐
ing torque wrench.
2. Tighten bolts -1- to 8 Nm using torque wrench.
3. Tighten bolts -2 ... 4- in diagonal sequence to 8 Nm using
torque wrench.

Turn bolts -1- 90° further (

Turn bolts -2 ... 4- 90° further (
quence using a rigid wrench.
Remaining installation steps are carried out in reverse sequence;
note the following:
– Secure turbocharger (left-side)
– Install vacuum pump
– Renew oil seal for toothed belt drive sprocket
– Fit adapter for oil seal with new O-ring
– Install toothed belt for high-pressure pump ⇒ Rep. gr. 23 .
– Install coolant pipe (rear)
– Install crankshaft oil seal (timing chain end)
– Install drive plate ⇒ page 71
– Bolt gearbox to engine and install engine/gearbox assembly
⇒ page 40 .
– Fill up with engine oil and check engine oil level ⇒ Mainte‐
nance ; Booklet 404 .
