8-cylinder TDI engine (4.2 ltr. 4-valve common rail), mechanics - Edition 12.2013
– Remove bolts -1- and -2-.
– Remove oil return hose -3- from sump (centre section).
– Remove oil return line (right-side).
– Remove alternator ⇒ Electrical system; Rep. gr. 27
– Remove coolant pipes: front
⇒ page 232 , right-side
– Remove coolant pump
– Remove timing chain covers
– Remove spur gear drive
– Remove sealing flange (front)
– Remove centre section of sump
– Remove oil pump ⇒ page 195
– Remove bolts -1 ... 4- for sump (top section).
– Press sump (top section) off spring pins on cylinder block.
Installing
Note
Renew gaskets, seals and O-rings.

Secure all hose connections with the correct type of hose clips
♦
(same as original equipment) ⇒ Electronic parts catalogue .
– Remove old sealant from grooves on sump (top section) -1-
and from sealing surfaces.
WARNING
Wear safety goggles.
– Remove sealant residue from sump (top section) and cylinder
block with rotating plastic brush or similar.
– Clean sealing surfaces; they must be free of oil and grease.
