8-cylinder TDI engine (4.2 ltr. 4-valve common rail), mechanics - Edition 12.2013
All vehicles (continued):
– Fit timing chain cover (left-side) and tighten bolts as follows:
1.
Pre-tighten bolts -1 ... 3- in diagonal sequence to 5 Nm us‐
ing torque wrench.
2.
Tighten bolts -4- to 8 Nm using torque wrench.
3.
Tighten bolts -1 ... 3- in diagonal sequence to 8 Nm using
torque wrench.
4.
Turn bolts -4- 90° further (
5.
Turn bolts -1 ... 3- 90° further (
quence using a rigid wrench.
– Apply sealant at joints between cylinder head and timing chain
cover (bottom) -arrow-, as shown in illustration.
Vehicles up to 03.2007:
– Apply bead of sealant onto clean sealing surfaces of timing
chain cover (right-side) as illustrated.
The groove -1- on the sealing surface must be completely filled
with sealant.
The bead of sealant must project 1.5 ... 2.0 mm above the
sealing surface.
– Fit gasket -2-.
Vehicles from 03.2007 onwards:
– Apply bead of sealant onto clean sealing surfaces of timing
chain cover (right-side) as illustrated.
The groove -arrow- on the sealing surface must be completely
filled with sealant.
The bead of sealant must project 1.5 ... 2.0 mm above the
sealing surface.
