LOWR
Measuring the forward and reverse
gear backlash before disassembly
1. Remove the water pump assembly and
outer plate cartridge. See "Removing the
water pump" (8-37).
2. Set the gear shift to the N position.

3. Install the special service tools, See
steps 3–7 in "Measuring the forward and
reverse gear backlash" (8-28).
4. Install the special service tool 1 at the
lowest possible position where the shaft
diameter is 16 mm (0.63 in).
5. Install the handle stopper 2 so that it is
resting on the step a on the drive shaft,
and then tighten the nuts b to the speci-
fied torque.

steps 11 and 12 in "Measuring the for-
ward and reverse gear backlash" (8-28).

7. Turn the drive shaft 180° clockwise and
measure the backlash again.

TIP:
• Measure the backlash at 4 points: c, d,
e, and f, turning the drive shaft 180°
clockwise after each measurement. Note
the measurement data in the shimming
check sheet.
• When turning the drive shaft, hold it with a
little force. A knocking sound may be heard
when the drive shaft is rotated, but this is
the sound of the pinion contacting the
reverse gear and does not affect the back-
lash measurement.
8. Determine the backlash average, and
then round down the average to the
1/100 place.

9. Check that the forward gear backlash
average is within specification.
