P r e c a u t i o n s a n d P r o c e d u r e s
General Precautions
Please read the f o l l o w i n g precautions carefully before
p e r f o r m i n g the airbag system service. Observe the
instructions described in this manual, or the airbags
could accidentally deploy and cause damage or injuries.
• Except w h e n p e r f o r m i n g electrical inspections,
always turn the ignition switch OFF, g r o u n d the SCS
line w i t h the HDS to take the PCM out of active status,
disconnect the negative cable f r o m the battery, and
wait at least 3 minutes before beginning work.
NOTE: The SRS m e m o r y is not erased even if the
ignition switch is turned OFF or the battery cables are
disconnected f r o m the battery.
• Use replacement parts w h i c h are manufactured to the
same standards and quality as the original parts. Do
not install used SRS parts. Use only new parts w h e n
making SRS repairs.
• Carefully inspect any SRS part before you install it.
Do not install any part that shows signs of being
dropped or i m p r o p e r l y handled, such as dents, cracks
or d e f o r m a t i o n .
• Before returning the vehicle to the customer, enter
the radio code, the navigation code, then enter the
customer's radio stations and X M channel presets,
and set the clock.
• After reconnecting the battery negative cable, if the
IMA battery level gauge (BAT) displays no segments,
start the engine, and hold it between 3,500 rpm and
4,000 r p m w i t h o u t load (in Park or Neutral) until the
BAT displays at least three segments.
Steering-related Precautions
Cable Reel Alignment
• Misalignment of the cable reel could cause an open in
the w i r i n g , make the SRS system, remote steering
wheel controls, and the horn inoperative. Center the
cable reel whenever the f o l l o w i n g is p e r f o r m e d (see
step 6 on page 24-152).
- Installation of the steering wheel
- Installation of the cable reel
- Installation of the steering c o l u m n
- Other steering-related adjustment or installation
• Do not disassemble the cable reel.
• Do not apply grease to the cable reel.
• If the cable reel shows any signs of damage, replace
it w i t h a new one. For example, if it does not rotate
s m o o t h l y , replace the cable reel.
• Before r e m o v i n g any of the SRS parts (including the
disconnection of the connectors), always disconnect
the SRS connector.
• Use only a digital multimeter to check the system. If it
is not a Honda multimeter, make sure its output is
10 m A (0.01 A) or less w h e n switched to the lowest
value in the o h m m e t e r range. A tester w i t h a higher
output could cause accidental d e p l o y m e n t and
possible injury.
• Do not put objects on the front passenger's airbag.
• The original radio and navigation system have a
coded theft protection circuit. Be sure to get the
customer's anti-theft codes and w r i t e d o w n the radio
stations and X M channel presets before
disconnecting the battery negative cable.
