What Is a Router?

Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)

Advantages of ISDN

117237-C Rev. A
A router is a device designed to deliver data from the source
network to the correct destination network. Once the data has
reached the correct network, the router's task is then to ensure
that the data reaches the correct station on that network. Most
routing environments have a method for uniquely identifying
each destination, which in most cases is a network number and a
station or node number. This method is very similar to the method
used by the post office to send mail to your home (i.e., Street
Name, Town, Area and Country).
To work effectively, routers gather information about networks
connected to them and update the other routers on the network
with this information. In this way they build up a logical picture
of the network, known as a routing table, and they work out the
quickest route to other networks.
The Nautica Series Routers are designed to take advantage of the
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) for the transmission
of data over digital telephone networks. ISDN allows the
telephone networks to carry data, voice and video along the same
cables. A Basic Rate Interface (BRI), the usual ISDN
implementation, consists of 2 x 64 Kb/s "B" channels for data and
a 16 Kb/s "D" channel for control information. For more
information on the physical connection to ISDN, refer to the
printed installation manual that came with your router.
Traffic from most network workstations typically consists of
short bursts of high-volume data with longer periods of little
activity. This often means that many users pay mainly for unused
time on their 64 Kb/s leased lines.
