Summary for Experienced GPIB Programmers

This section is intended for people familiar with GPIB instrument program-
ming. Terms like EOI, command synchronization and SCPI should be familiar to
you. If not, review the following sections in this chapter. This section is a sum-
mary to get your WDCA application operating quickly, focusing on ways in
which the WDCA differs from other instruments you may have encountered.
Wavelength Calibration
The WDCA wavelength can drift with temperature. The instrument has a
built-in gas absorption cell that is used to periodically calibrate the instru-
ment. You can request a calibration using CALibration:WAVelength:INTernal.
It is recommended that the WDCA be calibrated whenever the temperature
changes ±4 ° C from the last calibration. Refer to "Performing a User Wave-
length Calibration" on page 3-17 for more information.
Lambda Zero
The WDCA employs a tunable laser with mechanical components that must be
periodically realigned. The instrument will automatically execute the realign-
ment as needed. This is called Lambda Zero. In addition, the instrument pro-
vides a prediction (in minutes) when the next re-alignment will occur. Once a
realignment begins, the WDCA will not respond to any GPIB commands with
the exception of a serial poll. Refer to "Performing a User Wavelength Calibra-
tion" on page 3-17 for a detailed explanation.
It is recommended that:
• Status reporting be configured to report "Lambda Zero in progress" and
"Lambda Zero complete".
• Before writing to or reading from the instrument, you should check for
"Lambda Zero in progress".
• Monitor the "Lambda Zero Pending" status bit and force a wavelength cali-
bration at a convenient time. If "TLS Settle" time is less than 30 minutes, a
wavelength calibration will also include Lambda Zero.
