Receiver Noise Level is the smallest optical power that can be detected.
Receiver Noise
This value is provided so that you can determine how much fixture insertion

loss can be tolerated. For example, if a 40 dB integrating sphere is used at a
wavelength where the laser power is –12 dBm, the WDCA will receive only
– 52 dBm maximum. This leaves only a 33 dB range to measure the response
of the DUT.
Sweep speed
• Precision mode offers the most accurate sweep setting to use if you are
concerned about wavelength and amplitude accuracy for final filter test ap-
plications, but is the slowest.
• Normal mode provides excellent amplitude and wavelength accuracy. The
speed of two sweeps per second over a 2 nm span can be achieved. Normal
mode is the best general purpose mode.
• Fast mode allows wider spans with faster sweep speed. In this mode you can
measure filters with multiple channels or see if the rejection band holds over
wide ranges. Fast sweep mode may not be appropriate to use if the filter has
very sharp edges. The fast sweeping speed may not accurately display the
signal.
Acc Unspec
As you increase sensitivity, the instrument has to sweep slower in order to
(Accuracy
reduce the noise. The WDCA has to slow the laser source down in sync with

the receiver. The laser has a limited number of sweep rates available, and only
three are calibrated. At high sensitivity, the instrument has to either sweep too
fast or go to an uncalibrated sweep rate. Either can occur depending on sweep
settings. When either occurs, the Acc Unspec notation appears in the lower
right corner of the display and these specifications do not apply.
Trigger Cable
The laser source triggers the receiver via the rear panel, external trigger, BNC
cable connection. The source receiver synchronization is critical to the wave-
length accuracy. These specifications apply only for a one meter or less BNC
cable from the laser to the receiver.
