Gearcase
Gearcase Disassembly (Standard Rotation)
Gearcase Anodes — If anodes have eroded to
two-thirds their original size, they must be
replaced.

Drive Shaft — Check splines for visible dam-
age, twisting and wear. Severe spline wear indi-
cates the exhaust housing or gearcase has
been distorted, possibly by impact damage.
Water Intake Screens — Check for damage
and blockage. If screens cannot be cleaned,
they must be replaced. Refer to the correct
parts catalog.
Propeller Shaft Bearing Housing
and Reverse Gear Removal
The propeller shaft bearing housing of SLX-Type
gearcases is PRESSED into gearcase housing.
Use two flat-blade screwdrivers to remove the
ventilation ring from the gearcase. Insert the blade
of a small screwdriver into one of the tabs of the
ventilation ring. Carefully pry inward, toward the
propeller shaft. Use a larger screwdriver to pry the

ventilation ring up, then remove the ventilation
ring.

Use a punch to bend the tab of the locking ring
down.
Use Spanner Nut Wrench, P/N 358165, with a
breaker bar to loosen the spanner nut. Turn the
nut counter-clockwise to loosen.
