Warning System

S.A.F.E.
The S.A.F.E. (Speed Adjusting Failsafe Electron-
ics) warning system alerts the operator and pro-
tects against engine damage from the following
abnormal conditions:

Engine and Control Systems
Activation
When one of these conditions occurs, the EMM
interrupts fuel injector and ignition operation,
reducing engine speed to 1200 RPM. The warning
horn sounds and an Engine Monitor message dis-
plays. When S.A.F.E. is active, the engine will run
normally below 1200 RPM. Above 1200 RPM, the
engine will shake excessively.
Recovery
The engine will operate in S.A.F.E. as long as the
fault condition exists. To recover normal operation,
two conditions must be met:
Sensor or switch readings must be back within
limits
The EMM must be reset—stop and restart
Shutdown Mode
Outboard "shutdown" will occur if specific faults
are detected by the EMM.
Conditions that initiate shutdown
Code Description
15
ROM checksum error
29
Excessive EMM temperature
31
Excessive engine temperature
33
Excessive NO OIL condition
57
High RPM with low TPS setting
199
SHIFT calibration invalid
200
ESC driver status flag
201
ESC Position Sensors OOC
203
ESC Motor OPEN circuit
204
ESC Cannot achieve desired gear
205
ESC System Critical Fault
207
ESC Motor excessive current
Code 57 occurs when the EMM detects abnor-
mally high RPM relative to the TPS position. This
condition could be caused by uncontrolled fuel
entering the combustion cycle. Before removing
the code and STARTING the outboard, find and
repair the cause.
