Timing Adjustments

Timing Adjustments
NOTICE
Make sure the timing pointer is set and the
outboard reaches operating
BEFORE making any timing adjustments.
Ignition timing is set at the factory and does NOT
require routine adjustment.
Check ignition timing after any of the following
procedures:
Powerhead replacement
Crankshaft replacement
Flywheel replacement

Timing Pointer

WARNING
To prevent accidental starting while servic-
ing, remove the key from the key switch. Dis-
connect the battery cables at the battery.
NOTICE
The timing pointer is NOT set at the factory
and MUST be set BEFORE making any timing
adjustments.
The timing pointer must be adjusted to indicate
top dead center (TDC) of the number 1 piston.
This reference to the position of the number 1 pis-
ton is used to synchronize the electronic timing
controlled by the EMM with the mechanical posi-
tion of the number 1 piston.
Always check timing pointer adjustment before
using the Evinrude Diagnostics software Timing
Verification procedure.
Disconnect the battery cables at the battery.
Remove the plugs from the center frame, air duct
and flywheel. Remove the spark plugs.

Use Flywheel Nut Socket, P/N 357715, to rotate
the flywheel clockwise past the 28° ATDC mark on
the flywheel.

1. Flywheel Nut Socket, P/N 357715
Install the Piston Stop Tool, P/N 342679, com-
pletely into the spark plug hole of the number 1
cylinder.
1. Piston stop tool
1. Rotate flywheel counterclockwise until the
number 1 piston contacts the tool. Keep pres-
sure on the flywheel to position the piston firmly
against the tool. It is NOT necessary to force
the piston against the tool.
