Exhaust Water Valve Operation

During rapid acceleration, the EMM opens a valve
that injects water into the exhaust. This water
changes exhaust tuning, boosting midrange
horsepower as the boat comes on plane.
If the valve is plugged or not working, the operator
may not notice a problem during slow accelera-
tion. During rapid acceleration, the outboard will
be low on power around 3200 rpm, depending on
boat and load.
If the valve is stuck open, the outboard may be
low on top speed power (above 4600 RPM).

Exhaust Water Valve Tests

Static Test

Use Evinrude Diagnostics software to test the
water valve solenoid electrical circuit. The water
valve is a 55 volt coil. The static test, which oper-
ates on 12 VDC, will not activate the water valve.
Monitor the voltage at pin B (blue/yellow wire) of
the water valve connector. Voltage should drop
while the static test is active.

Dynamic Test

Use the diagnostics program to perform a
dynamic test of the water valve while the outboard
is running.
Disconnect the water valve outlet hoses.
Start the outboard. No water should flow from the
hoses. If water appears, check for debris in valve
assembly.
With the outboard idling, activate the Water Valve
test and check for water flow. A steady stream of
water should flow from the hose while the test is
running.

1. Water Valve Test
Check engine water pressure. At 5 psi (34 kPa),
water should flow at a rate of 64 to 128 ounces /
minute (550 to 750cc / minute).
Results:
No water flow—check for debris in valve
assembly water supply line and water filter.
Refer to Circuit Tests on p. 279.
Water appears—make sure fittings into exhaust
runners are clear.

Circuit Tests

55 Volt Circuit
Use a digital multimeter with appropriate test
probe leads to measure the resistance of the
exhaust water valve 55V circuit.
Make sure the key switch is OFF.
Connect the positive meter lead to the engine har-
ness connector wire listed in the table. Connect
the negative meter lead to the red/white wire of a
known good circuit such as a fuel injector.
