Engine and Control Systems
Throttle, Shift and Steering Control Systems
The EMM monitors how much effort is required to
move the throttle plate. When the 20ms duty cycle
sum is greater than 5500, the throttle plate
requires too much effort to move. The EMM:
Activates S.A.F.E.
Stores fault code 180
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
If the key is turned on but the engine is not imme-
diately started, the EMM checks throttle plate
movement. If the throttle plate cannot close less
than or equal to 10%, or if it cannot open greater
than or equal to 80%, the throttle plate is not func-
tioning correctly. The EMM:
Activates S.A.F.E.
Stores fault code 191
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
The EMM monitors the ETC driver voltage, tem-
perature and current. If any of these values are
out of range, the EMM:
Activates S.A.F.E.
Stores fault code 181
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON

Electronic Shift Controller

The EMM receives inputs from the remote control
via the remote control network. The EMM trans-
mits the input signals to the Electronic Shift Con-
troller (ESC). The ESC processes the inputs and
transmits signals to the shift actuator. The shift
actuator consists of a motor assembly, a Shift
Position Sensor (SPS), and a NEUTRAL switch.
The motor assembly drives the mechanical shift
mechanism, while the SPS and NEUTRAL switch
send actual gear position back to the EMM.
The EMM monitors the Shift Position Sensor
(SPS).
If the SPS voltage is less than 0.25 V, the EMM:
Activates S.A.F.E.
Stores fault code 195
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
86
If the SPS voltage is greater than 4.75 V, the
EMM:
Activates S.A.F.E.
Stores fault code 196
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
If the shift actuator cannot achieve the com-
manded gear, the EMM:
Activates S.A.F.E.
Activates SHUTDOWN
(if NEUTRAL cannot be achieved)
Stores fault code 204
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
If the SPS position differs from the NEUTRAL
switch position, the EMM:
Activates SHUTDOWN
Stores fault code 201
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
The EMM monitors for undesired actuator move-
ment when the actuator is in FORWARD, NEU-
TRAL, or REVERSE. If movement is detected, the
EMM:
Activates SHUTDOWN
Stores fault code 205
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
The EMM monitors the shift actuator NEUTRAL
switch.
If the NEUTRAL switch voltage is less than 0.5 V,
the EMM:
Activates S.A.F.E.
Stores fault code 197
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
If the NEUTRAL switch voltage is greater than
4.5 V, the EMM:
Activates S.A.F.E.
Stores fault code 198
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
