Dynamic Power
Steering (DPS)
The DPS system consists of a hydraulic steering
helm, hydraulic hoses, hydraulic fluid, the DPS
module, and a hydraulic DPS steering pump
assembly.
The DPS module monitors and controls the DPS
system. The EMM monitors the DPS module,
stores fault codes and activates the engine moni-
tor should a fault code be generated.
Also refer to the DPS Troubleshooting Tables
and Fault Code Table at the end of this manual
If the DPS motor circuit is OPEN, the EMM:
Stores fault code 211
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
If DPS motor current exceeds allowed limit, the
EMM:
Stores fault code 216
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
If DPS module supply voltage is less than 5 volts,
the EMM:
Stores fault code 217
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
If DPS module temperature exceeds 176° F
(80° C), the EMM:
Stores fault code 218
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON

ABA Models (DPS-1)

The DPS system of ABA engine models includes
a 500 psi (3447 kPa) helm pressure sensor and a
2000 psi (13790 kPa) pump pressure sensor.
As the steering wheel is turned hydraulic fluid in
the helm begins moving through the steering sys-
tem.

Dynamic Power Steering (DPS)

The helm pressure sensor signals the DPS mod-
ule of an increase in hydraulic pressure in the
direction of the turn. The DPS module then turns
ON the DPS pump providing steering assistance.
As the outboard approaches the steering system
stop, the pump pressure sensor signals the DPS
module of an increase in hydraulic pressure
beyond normal steering load. The DPS module
then turns OFF the DPS pump to maximize sys-
tem efficiency.
The DPS Module monitors Helm Pressure Sensor
(HPS) voltage and Pump Pressure Sensor (PPS)
voltage.
If HPS voltage is less than 0.12 V, the EMM:
Stores fault code 212
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
If HPS voltage is greater than 4.6 V, the EMM:
Stores fault code 213
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
If HPS voltage, or PPS voltage is less than 0.12 V,
the EMM:
Stores fault code 214
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
If HPS voltage, or PPS voltage is greater than
4.6 V, the EMM:
Stores fault code 215
Engine Monitor: CHECK ENGINE display ON
AFA & Newer Models (DPS-2)
The DPS system of AFA and newer engine mod-
els includes 1500 psi (10342 kPa) port and star-
board helm pressure sensors and a steering
position sensor.
As the steering wheel is turned hydraulic fluid in
the helm begins moving through the steering sys-
tem.
One helm pressure sensor signals the DPS mod-
ule of an increase in hydraulic pressure in the
direction of the turn. The DPS module then
