Fuel System
Components
Fuel Level
The fuel level in the reservoir is regulated by the
fuel vapor vent solenoid.

1. Upper fuel level micro switch (approximate location)
2. Fuel level float
3. Lower fuel level micro switch (approximate location)
Electrical Circuit
The EMM monitors the fuel level micro switches.
When the lower micro switch closes, the EMM
opens the fuel vapor vent solenoid, allowing vapor
to escape as the fuel lift pump adds fuel to the res-
ervoir.
If the lower micro switch remains closed beyond
the specified range (5 seconds) {assumes the fuel
system is primed}, the EMM:
Activates S.A.F.E.
Stores fault code 137
Engine Monitor CHECK ENGINE display: ON
If the lower micro switch circuit voltage is discon-
nected (open circuit), the EMM:
Stores fault code 133
Engine Monitor CHECK ENGINE display: ON
When the upper micro switch closes, the EMM
closes the fuel vapor vent solenoid, preventing
vapor and fuel from escaping.
If the upper micro switch circuit voltage is discon-
nected (open circuit), the EMM:
Activates S.A.F.E.
Stores fault code 132
Engine Monitor CHECK ENGINE display: ON

Fuel Filters

Fuel filters protect the fuel lift pump, vapor separa-
tor and the high-pressure components of the fuel
system from contaminants.
A 250 micron inline filter and a 10 micron water
separating fuel filter are installed. A water in fuel
sensor is mounted in the housing of the water
separating fuel filter.
Refer to Inspection and Maintenance Schedule
on p. 16 for service frequency.

2. Water separating fuel filter
Electrical Circuit
The EMM monitors the water in fuel electrical cir-
cuit. If the circuit is activated, the EMM:
Stores fault code 37
Engine Monitor CHECK ENGINE display: ON

Fuel Rails

The fuel supply and return rails route fuel through
the high pressure side of the fuel system.
Fuel Supply Rail
The fuel supply rail supplies pressurized fuel to
the inlet port of each fuel injector. The fuel supply
rails can be identified by the green locking device
on each connector fitting.
Fuel Return Rail
The fuel return rail provides a route for fuel pass-
ing through the fuel injectors to flow back to the
fuel chamber of the fuel pump & vapor separator
assembly.
