Gearcase
Gearcase Removal and Installation
Disconnect the shift actuator cable from the
engine harness.
CAUTION
Gearcase lubricant may be under pressure
and/or hot if outboard was recently operated
or if gearcase lubricant is above the Maxi-
mum level.
Wear safety glasses and take precautions to
avoid injury when removing vent hose from
reservoir upper fitting.
Turn the reservoir horizontal with the hose fittings
facing upward as shown. Then remove the vent
hose from the upper fitting to relieve gearcase
pressure.
Remove the clamp from the gearcase oil reservoir
hose. Then remove the hose from the gearcase
oil reservoir. Drain the oil into a suitable container.
Plug the end of the oil reservoir hose.

1. Remove the vent hose from the upper fitting
2. Remove hose from the gearcase oil reservoir.

Remove the eight gearcase mounting nuts.

Remove the gearcase assembly and the upper
driveshaft. If the upper driveshaft does not come
off with the gearcase, remove it from the exhaust
housing.
Gearcase Installation
During service, the outboard may drop unex-
pectedly. Avoid personal injury; always sup-
port the outboards weight with a suitable
hoist or the trailering lever during service.
Use Evinrude Diagnostics software (version
6.1 or later) to calibrate the shift actuator
when installing a new gearcase or a new shift
actuator. Failure to calibrate the shift actuator
can result in damage to the shift actuator.
Coat the splines of the upper and lower drivesh-
afts with Moly Lube.
