Oiling System Tests

Oil Pump Function Test

Remove oil distribution hose from oil manifold.
Refer to Oil Distribution Hoses on p. 204. Tem-
porarily install a length of oil hose, P/N 778708.

Running Test
Start the outboard and observe oil flow. Confirm
that a small amount of oil is discharged while
pump is activated.
Static Test
Use the Evinrude Diagnostics software oil pump
test to activate the oil pump. Confirm that a small
amount of oil is discharged while pump is acti-
vated.
Results:
Oil flows from distribution hose, compare to oil
flow at other distribution hoses.
If one or more fittings fail to discharge oil,
replace the oil pump assembly.
After completing the tests, remove the temporary
oil hose, then install the oil distribution hose(s).
Prime the oil system. Refer to Oil Supply Priming
on p. 196.

Oil Fittings Flow Test

Make sure the oil fittings of the cylinder and crank-
case assembly allow fluid to move.
Remove oil distribution hose from crankcase fit-
ting. Temporarily install a length of oil hose on the
fitting.
Use a Syringe, P/N 346936, filled with isopropyl
alcohol to force fluid through hose and fitting.

LOW OIL Switch Test

Remove oil from the oil tank
Turn the key switch ON. The dash mounted
Engine Monitor system should show a LOW OIL
009315
warning.
Once the warning has been confirmed, refill the oil
tank.
Start the engine. The LOW OIL warning should
stop when the oil level exceeds 25% of oil tank's
capacity and the oil pump activates three times.

LOW OIL Switch Circuit Test

Remove the electrical connector from the LOW
OIL switch.
Use the diode test function of a digital multimeter
to check the signal circuit.
Connect the BLACK meter lead to the wire listed
in the table, connect the RED meter lead to
engine ground.
LOW OIL Level Switch Circuit Diode Test
Wire

Results:
No reading (OL or
A reading of zero (0) indicates an short circuit.
Isolate the faulty component. Check wiring and
connections. Repair or replace faulty wiring.
Use a digital multimeter with appropriate test
probe leads to measure the resistance of the LOW
OIL switch ground circuit.
