If the clock input at the PRI external clock input of the first chassis fails (DS1 LOS or AIS),
DS1 AIS is transmitted to all other chassis (PRI Clock Out to PRI Clock In), forcing an automatic
clock switch to the SEC clock source at each chassis.
If the SEC external clock input of the first chassis also fails, DS1 AIS is transmitted to all other
chassis (SEC Clock Out to SEC Clock In), forcing each chassis into holdover.
When a valid external clock input is restored to the first chassis, DS1 AIS at the output of the
first chassis clears after about 12 seconds. DS1 AIS at the output of the second chassis clears
after about 24 seconds, and so on, until DS1 AIS at the output of the 5th chassis clears after
about 60 seconds (12 seconds × 5). The 12-second delay in removing DS1 AIS at each chassis
ensures that the clock input does not have an intermittent failure and that the clock output is
frequency stable before being forwarded to the next chassis. Clock holdover (if present) at each
chassis clears at about the same time that the DS1 AIS output clears.
