DSX Considerations

The OPTI-6100 is equipped to deliver several types of digital circuits (see
Figure 6
on page 15, and
chassis for these circuits if the chassis is equipped with digital circuit tributary modules. The
type of tributary modules used determines the type and location of the In and Out connections.
Depending on the system application, each chassis might require connections to the DSX-1
cross-connect, the DSX-3 cross-connect, or both.
NOTE
Cabling the DSX-3 terminations and BITS timing connections prior
to the DSX-1 terminations can simplify cable dress and routing.
DSX-3
To deliver DS3 level circuits, connect coaxial cables with BNC connectors to the appropriate
connectors on the back panel of the OPTI-6100. The connectors are labeled based on the MS
slot pairs/groups capable of delivering this type of circuit:
In the MX chassis: 1&2, 5&6, 7&8, and 11&12
In the SMX chassis: 1&2, and 3&4
In the LMX chassis:
Slots 1–4 Working, Slot 5 Protect
Slots 9–12 Working, Slot 8 Protect
Slots 13–16 Working, Slot 17 Protect
Slots 21–24 Working, Slot 20 Protect
If an MS slot is equipped with a DS3 module, each DS3 circuit is delivered on a pair of BNC
connectors. Route these cables to a DSX-3 cross-connect panel or other suitable device. The
BNC connectors are labeled to correspond with the MS slot they support. Slots supporting DS3
have three pairs of BNC connectors, labeled
port DS3 module, only the first pair is used. For a three-port DS3 module, the three pairs of
connectors correspond respectively to the three DS3 facilities.
If a chassis is to be equipped with a DS3 module, reserve a position on the DSX-3 cross-
connect. Route two runs of coax cable from a position on the DSX-3 cross-connect to the antic-
ipated location of the chassis and terminate them with standard BNC connectors on the chassis
end. Label the cables IN and OUT at the chassis end to indicate where they are connected on
the DSX-3 cross-connect.
Coaxial cables for DS3 signals must conform to the following specifications:
Characteristic impedance: 75 ohm
Nominal mutual capacitance: up to 20.4 pF/foot
ANSI standard T1-102 (1993) pulse mask definition compliant
Cables designed for this application can be ordered through ADTRAN.
