OPTI-6100 Installation and Turn-Up Practice
DSX-1 (MX and SMX)
Wiring DSX-1 cross-connects from the MX and SMX chassis uses 64-pin champ connectors.
Only the first 28 pairs are used, providing 28 cross-connect positions per DS1 port. The
connectors are labeled based on the MS slots capable of delivering this type of circuit:
In the MX chassis: slots 3&4, 7&8, and 9&10
In the SMX chassis: slots 3&4
To connect a chassis to a standard DSX-1 cross-connect, use two 24 AWG, 28-pair twisted,
shielded transmission cables with 64-pin female connectors on the chassis end. See
on page 21.
Champ connections to the MX or SMX must meet the following minimum characteristics:
Solid copper-tinned wire
Shielded cable with drain wire; Drain wire should be connected to pin 64, unless this
arrangement is preempted by customer specification
Color coding to conform to industry standard blue/white through slate-violet coding for
pairs 1 through 25 with separate binder groups for pairs 26 through 28 or 32
24 AWG or 22 AWG; 24 AWG preferred
28 or 32 pair; 28 pair preferred
100 ohm nominal characteristic impedance; ±15%
Mutual capacitance of 15.72 pF/foot nominal; 17.3 pF/foot absolute maximum
Attenuation for DS1 signal @ 0.772 MHz (1.544 Mb/s) nominally 12.3 dB/1000 foot
Worst pair PSNEXT 53 dB @ 150 kHz, 42 dB @ 772 kHz, 38 dB @ 1600 kHz, or better, for
test cable length of 1000 feet
Cables must conform to the following specifications:
GR-499-DSX-1 Pulse Wave Shape Compliance at 655 feet
TIA/EIA 464B DSX-1 Pulse Wave Shape Compliance at 655 feet
UL-c (UL) Type CMR/CMG
Jacket and insulation material to conform to existing industry standards, and to any
applicable customer specifications
To deliver DSX-1 level circuits, complete the following steps:
1. Connect champ cables to the champ connectors for the MS slots.
2. Secure the cables with the screw on the right end and a cable tie on the left end.
3. Route these cables to the cross-connect panel or DSX device being used to terminate the
circuits and connect them using standard color code.
Cables designed for this application, with the shield connected to pin 64 of the connector, can
be ordered through ADTRAN. Since the chassis provides a ground connection on pin 64 of each
connector, plugging these cables into the chassis provides proper grounding of the cable shield.
