Search Algorithms – Binary
The next-complex search algorithm is binary. Here, the test is
performed at the defined search limits. If a pass/fail transition is indi-
cated, the search is started; otherwise a warning message occurs.
The parameter is set to halfway between the limits, and a functional
test is run again. Depending on whether this passes or fails, the param-
eter moves halfway again in the direction of expected pass/fail transi-
tion.
This is repeated until the maximum resolution of the parameter has
been reached. The test returns the pass value closest to the transition.
Advantages:
• very few steps needed, even for large search limits
• fast
• always highest possible resolution
Disadvantages:
• can miss anomalies in areas of large steps
