I Hard Disk Drives (HD)
Disk assemblies are plug-in, random access, read/write magnetic hard disk assemblies, requiring no
adjustments or jumper configurations.
The VP 300 cabinet uses Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) technology hard disk drives that
interface to a single SCSI bus. This bus is controlled by the VCU. Disk drives are used for two
functions:
System/Voice disks, which store the operating system programs, system voice prompts,
configuration information, and voice messages.
A portion of a system/voice disk is reserved for system software, configuration data, and system
prompts. The balance of the drive is used for voice message storage.
Voice storage disks, which store only voice messages.
Each VP 300 contains from one to six hard disk drives, depending upon capacity and redundancy
requirements.
The first disk drive (slot B3) is always a system/voice disk. If a second disk (slot B4) is installed, it is
also a system/voice disk. If additional disk drives (slots C1–C4) are installed, they are voice disks
only.
Hot Standby redundancy of all system software, configuration data, and system prompts is
automatically provided when a second system disk is installed. Hot Standby Redundancy is not
available when only one system disk is installed.
Optional software enhancements offer redundancy for names, greetings, and messages in any system
containing two or more disk drives. When Names and Greetings Redundancy and Message
Redundancy are installed, names, greetings, and messages are made redundant in the following
manner:
In systems containing two disk drives, redundancy is on the second drive.
In systems containing more than two disk drives, redundancy is on any drive spread out over all
equipped drives.
Refer to the Feature Description manual — HARD DISK REDUNDANCY.
A portion of the total hard disk capacity is reserved for system software, configuration database, and
system prompts. Each disk is rated according to the voice storage time available. A VP 300 cabinet
can contain from 8 to 350 hours of voice storage for systems at Release 5.4 and earlier, and 8 to 550
hours of storage for systems at Release 6.1 and later. To upgrade storage capacity, larger disks may
replace smaller disks, or additional disks can be added to the system. Only disks provided by Toshiba
may be used.
