During regeneration white smoke may be temporarily generated from the tail pipe as a result of particulate
matter combustion. This does not indicate a failure.
The engine speed may rise while idling, when this occurs the DPD (Diesel Particulate Diffuser) is in the process
of automatic regeneration. This does not indicate a failure.
The DPD removes diesel particulates from the exhaust gases; eventually it will get saturated with these particles
and will require a regeneration process.
Regeneration is the cleaning of exhaust particulates, (soot) collected by the filter in the exhaust system. During
a regeneration cycle the exhaust gas temperature is raised sufficiently to burn the soot collected in the filter. The
soot is converted into a fine ash which is retained inside the exhaust filter and has to be removed periodically.
Refer to: Maintenance > Maintenance Schedules (Page 177).
The engine has five regeneration modes:
1. Auto - No user interaction is required during auto regeneration.
2. Manual - DPD lamp slow blink (Stage 1 warning)
3. Manual - DPD lamp fast blink (Stage 2 warning)
4. Limp Mode - Forced Regeneration
5. Limp Mode -Slow Forced Regeneration
Regeneration occurs:
Automatically approximately every 8 machine hours.
Automatically when the particulate matter accumulation level exceeds a saturation threshold (100%).
Manually after being requested by the engine controller and confirmed by the operator.
Manually by a service engineer initiating regeneration via ServiceMaster once the machine is in limp mode.
DPD Saturation Level
The DPD saturation level is displayed in the form of a bar graph. each bar in the graph represents 10%
saturation. This will be displayed on the operator's display for 5s when the ignition is turned on (the ignition
must have been off for more than 30min), after this time the operator selected home screen is shown.
Automatic Regeneration Mode
Regeneration automatically occurs every approximately 8 machine hours or when particulate matter
accumulation level exceeds a saturation threshold of 100%. The green regeneration symbol is displayed for 5s,
after this time the green regeneration symbol will move to the bottom of the screen and the auto regeneration
cycle will begin. No operator interaction is required during auto regeneration. When regeneration is complete
the green regeneration symbol will be replaced by the fan speed symbol. If the engine is switched off before
the regeneration cycle is complete, the cycle will resume when the engine is restarted.
